(Berlin's) Street Food Pavillon

The Street Food Lantern

Gathering people around one table has always been a good way to socialise and have a nice conversation. Talking to the person sitting next to you, while enjoying a good meal, provides a good opportunity for personal and cultural exchange.

The street food structure will be designed as a “signal pavilion” in shape of a lantern. In ancient Asian cultures lanterns have always represented hospitality and gastronomy, especially in the evenings. This pavilion applies the same concept and adds the feature of cultural exchange in the international city of Berlin.

The project’s aim is to connect the idea of serving good and exotic food with connecting people. The Street Food Lantern shall stand for a new activity right in the heart of Alexander Platz and therefore create a new centrality.

The concept of a flexible lantern structure shall stand for many people of different heritages and includes not only their cuisines but also their respective cultures. As Berlin is one of the biggest melting pots in Europe, the pavilion is supposed to represent the internationality of the city. This will be realized in form of changing menus. The Street Food Lantern gives people the opportunity to monthly discover new exotic dishes. Every time the kitchen changes, the exterior textile front of the lantern can be changed as well in order to reflect and represent the respective culture.

The lantern will be surrounded by a modular system of tables and benches in order to create the comfortable atmosphere of a beer garden. The tables’ set up is extensive as well as modifiable and can therefore be changed according the particular event and theme.

COOKING PROCESS

The customers will be involved in the process of cooking and can discover new kinds of food and their preparation. The circle form of the service counter supports the idea of following the food on every stage of preparation.

 FORM AND STRUCTURE

The lantern pavilion will be designed in the shape of a small tower which is ought to be a second signal coexisting with the TV Tower.

The project’s purpose is to sustainably take advantage of four unused 3 m-containers.  The containers are essential for the construction as they build the rectangular tower which gives the lantern its shape and light form.

The bottom container is stuck in the ground. It will be is used as the kitchen and will be appointed with all the necessary equipment. The three others containers build the main structure and the framework for the textile curtain. Also, the numerous spot lights, which will illuminate the Street Food Lantern at night, will be attached to the frame.

MATERIAL

The structure is draped with a textile skin curtain, which can be illuminated with help of spot lights. Patterns or colour can be projected on the textile and re-created every time the menu is changing. Therefore the textile skin curtain represents not only the particular cuisine but also cuisine its culture in a symbolic way.
