Temporary Auditorium for Refugees and the Host Community

This auditorium is a place where people can meet and benefit from intercultural exchange in form of art and education: such as organizing movie screenings from participants’ respective home countries and language courses.

The project represents the entire process of integration, starting from building the auditorium until the organization of the cultural events. Local people and refugees will both discover the value of cultural diversity by being part of the project.

The structure is draped with a textile skin curtain, which can be re-created every time the object is IN MOTION. There will definitely be qualified craftsmen among refugees and local people who enjoy designing and creating the textile curtain.

Each time the cinema is moved, both communities work together and personalize their temporary auditorium by weaving the curtain. The project will then be a new architectural SIGNAL, which will in time be totally integrated as both parties of the community are involved in equal measure.

Sharing cultural differencies : the social impact

The auditorium will be used for cultural activities like movie screenings and cultural workshops like cooking or language classes. These activities could be organized from non-profit associations or the local administration.

The aim is to propose activities that always involve local people and refugees. The project consists in achieving a long-term balance through repeated give and take.

Refugees who benefit from language classes shall return a favor to the community in form of introducing their home cuisine to local people in a street food event. When they take part in a cultural activity such as movie screenings, they shall help to keep the auditorium maintained or take part to the social life with the locals.

On the other hand, local people will support the project in form of small entry fees for movie screenings or in form of helping out in language courses as temporary teachers. They will be rewarded for their partnership by the help from refugees for locals tasks or with a street food event one time in a month

The idea of movie screenings/language lessons shall connect people as it enables them to better understand the foreign culture. It also gives people a good basis to start conversations and discover similarities among their differences.
